WhatsApp may soon introduce a feature allowing people without a WhatsApp account to join calls. Currently, having an account on the platform is mandatory to join a WhatsApp call, but Meta is preparing to change this rule.

According to reports, WhatsApp is working on a new feature called "Guest Calls." This will enable users to create a call link and share it with individuals who do not use WhatsApp. Notably, the recipient will not need to create a new account or download the WhatsApp app.

How will the WhatsApp Guest Calls feature work?
According to a report by WABetaInfo, this feature could be based on WhatsApp's existing Guest Chat system. Users will be able to generate a call link directly from the WhatsApp "Calls" tab.

To do this, the user must first select the type of call, after which a link will be generated. This link can then be shared with friends, family, or colleagues.

If the recipient does not have WhatsApp on their phone, they can open the link directly in a web browser. The call can then proceed via WhatsApp Web, eliminating the need to install the app or create an account.

This feature could be particularly useful for groups comprising both WhatsApp users and non-users, making it easier to include people in family calls, online meetings, or team discussions.

Host controls access to the call
It has been reported that the host will have certain key controls for Guest Calls. If someone attempts to join the call via a Guest Link, the host can accept or reject their request.

Once the call has started, the host will be able to add or remove participants. There may also be an option to end the entire call if necessary.

What about privacy?
According to reports, end-to-end encryption is expected to remain a feature of Guest Calls as well. In other words, WhatsApp is aiming to maintain its existing security standards.

However, this feature is currently in the development stage. A prototype has not yet been made available even to beta testers, and WhatsApp has not announced an official rollout date.

If this feature becomes available to all users in the future, adding participants to WhatsApp calls could become significantly easier. The ability to join calls without an account or the app itself could make it even more convenient than platforms like Zoom and Google Meet.
