EPFO Old EPF Account Linking Process: If you started your career before the introduction of the Universal Account Number (UAN) or the mandatory requirement of Aadhaar in 2014, your Provident Fund (PF) money from previous employers might be stuck, or you may have forgotten your old Member ID. Often, crores of rupees remain unclaimed due to job changes and the creation of multiple establishment IDs.

According to RTI data, as of March 31, 2026, the EPFO held an unclaimed balance of approximately ₹9,330 crore across more than 30.91 lakh inoperative accounts. To address this major issue, the EPFO has introduced a new Aadhaar-based digital portal, making it extremely easy to locate old, inactive PF accounts and transfer them to your current UAN.

Why do issues arise with pre-2014 PF accounts?

Before the introduction of the UAN in 2014, joining a new company meant getting a separate Member ID. A new ID was generated with every job change, but there was no single common number to link them all. Aadhaar was made mandatory for KYC purposes after 2014. However, the funds of employees who had left their jobs before 2014—or who did not link their old Member IDs—remained stuck in those old accounts.

How will the new Aadhaar-based EPFO portal work?

According to experts, the upgraded portal will help easily trace old, inactive accounts. First, the member must log in to or verify their identity on the portal using their Aadhaar. The system will search for your old EPF accounts based on your Aadhaar and personal details. Once the accounts are found, you can transfer the funds to your currently active UAN under the 'One Member – One EPF Account' facility or opt for a one-time settlement.

What should you do if you do not remember your old Member ID or UAN? If you have completely forgotten your old PF number, there is no need to panic:

Contact your former company: Your previous employer maintains permanent records of your employment and Member ID. They can retrieve this information from the EPFO employer portal.

Generate UAN yourself: If you held a PF account prior to 2014 and no UAN was generated, you can generate one directly via the 'UAN Allotment for Existing PF Account' option on the EPFO member portal.

'One Member – One EPF Account' service: Go to the 'Services' section on the Unified Portal and click on 'Request for Transfer of Account'. Your old account will be merged with your new UAN using Aadhaar-verified details.

How to claim funds if the company has closed down?

If your former company has shut down or is no longer operational, visit your nearest regional EPFO office. Carry your Aadhaar card along with old identity proofs, service records, or any other relevant documents. EPFO officials will help trace your old records from their system and link them to your new UAN.

Documents required for the application

Keep the following documents handy before starting the process:

Aadhaar card linked to a mobile number (to receive the OTP).
Old EPF details (if available—such as Member ID, employer's name, or regional office code).
PAN card and active bank account details linked to your current UAN.
