EPassport India: India's new e-passport, equipped with an RFID chip, has arrived. Find out how long old passports will remain valid..
The Indian government has launched a new e-passport in the country. This passport will look similar to the old passport, but it will have a radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip embedded inside. This chip will securely store your photo, biometrics, and other important information.
The government stated that e-passports will reduce immigration check times at airports. Scanning the chip will instantly identify the passenger. Additionally, several new security features have been added to this passport, making it difficult to create counterfeit passports.
E-passports have currently been issued in some major cities and will be implemented across India in the near future. Under the Passport Seva Program Version 2.0 (PSP V2.0), which began in May 2025, all new passports will be issued exclusively as e-passports from May 2035.
What will happen to old passports?
The government has clearly stated that those who currently hold old passports will remain valid until their expiration date. People do not need to replace them now. When the validity of the passport expires and you go for renewal, you will get a new e-passport. The government is updating the entire system under Passport Seva Programme V2.0, which includes online process, digital verification, and AI-based features.
