In today's digital era, where every task is becoming easier through the use of smartphones and the internet, the government, too, is now leveraging technology to address major societal challenges. In line with this trend, during the recently held 'Chintan Shivir' (Deliberation Camp) in Chandigarh, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment took a significant step by launching two new and upgraded mobile applications.

The government's primary objective is to transform two of the country's most critical ongoing campaigns—the 'Nasha Mukti' (Drug-Free India) campaign and 'Rehabilitation Programs for Beggars'—by moving them away from traditional paper-based processes and making them entirely high-tech and effective. Previously, gathering accurate data and monitoring these social initiatives often proved to be a time-consuming endeavor. However, with the aid of these new apps, the entire workflow will now become smart, transparent, and real-time.

These two newly upgraded applications are named the NMBA 2.0 App (Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan) and the SMILE-Beggary Survey App. Let us delve into this new technological initiative to understand exactly what these apps are, what new features have been incorporated into them, and how they will function at the grassroots level:

1. NMBA 2.0 App (Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan)
The NMBA 2.0 App has been introduced as a centralized digital tool designed to lend renewed strength to the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' (Drug-Free India Campaign). This application will facilitate better coordination by bringing together state governments, district administrations, and various social organizations onto a single unified platform. The most distinctive feature of this upgraded version is its 'real-time tracking' capability. Through this feature, agencies ranging from the national level down to the district level will now be able to access live reports and monitor drug de-addiction activities via a single, shared dashboard.

From a technical standpoint, this app is built upon a data-driven approach. This essentially means that decisions pertaining to the campaign will henceforth be made on the basis of precise, accurate data. This will ensure greater transparency and accountability throughout the entire process. Furthermore, the app will also serve as a comprehensive digital resource platform. Essential banners, posters, and educational materials (IEC materials) designed to spread awareness will be available here at all times.

For the convenience of the public, direct helpline support has also been integrated into the platform. Through this feature, individuals can directly connect with de-addiction helplines or reach out to the 'MANAS' helpline for mental health assistance. Additionally, a specialized 'Volunteer Management' feature has been added for the benefit of organizations. This feature will simplify the process of onboarding 'Master Volunteers' and digitally managing large-scale events, such as oath-taking ceremonies.

2. SMILE–Beggary Survey App
To eradicate the practice of begging and accelerate the rehabilitation process, the Ministry has introduced the SMILE–Beggary Survey App as a game-changer. Until now, surveys in this sector were conducted using outdated, manual methods. Consequently, there were significant delays in data acquisition, and the scope for errors remained substantial. However, this new mobile app will eliminate these challenges by digitizing the entire survey process.

The greatest strength of this app lies in its 'Digital Data Collection' feature, which enables agencies working in the field to record survey data directly at the site. This will not only enhance data accuracy but also accelerate the pace of the entire campaign. Another major benefit of this digital initiative will manifest in the form of 'Real-time Monitoring.' With its aid, the Ministry and the District Administration will be able to monitor—directly from their offices—the progress and pace of survey operations across various cities.

Furthermore, the app incorporates advanced 'Data Analytics' tools. These tools will analyze the performance metrics of different cities, making it easier for officials to identify bottlenecks in operations and determine how to resolve them immediately. Overall, this app stands as an excellent example of the synergy between data and technology in the pursuit of a society free from begging.
