If your monthly electricity bill is higher than expected, a simple nighttime habit could help reduce it. Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has urged people to unplug chargers, adapters, and unnecessary electronic devices at night. The department has promoted the mantra "Charge It Right, Unplug at Night." This practice can help cut down on wasteful electricity consumption while also enhancing the safety and lifespan of the devices.

**Which devices should be unplugged at night?**
UPPCL advises unplugging devices like chargers and routers at night. You can charge your phone before going to bed and then remove the charger from the socket. Similarly, the router's adapter can be unplugged when not in use. High-power household appliances—such as kitchen chimneys, geysers, microwaves, and televisions—can also be disconnected at night when they aren't needed. The goal is to minimize unnecessary electricity consumption by devices that are not in use at that time.

**Saving both electricity and devices**
When left plugged in continuously, some devices continue to consume electricity even in standby mode. Furthermore, constant charging, overheating, and voltage fluctuations can negatively affect the device or the charger. According to UPPCL, unplugging devices at night not only reduces power consumption but also helps extend their lifespan. During summer nights, there is also a risk of load issues and power fluctuations; unplugging devices protects them from potential damage.

**How much electricity and money can be saved?**
According to available data, standby power consumption can account for approximately 5% to 10% of a typical household's electricity bill. Unplugging non-essential devices at night is estimated to save between 100 and 300 units of electricity annually. Meanwhile, unplugging small devices like chargers and adapters overnight can result in monthly savings of approximately 3 to 10 units. Unplugging heavy appliances such as refrigerators and geysers is reported to save between 5 and 7 units per month.
