Digital safety for teenagers: YouTube introduces special parental controls; will promote educational content...
The YouTube app already offers several tools to help parents set limits on their children's devices. Recently, the Google-owned platform announced new features specifically designed to give parents more control over their teenage children's viewing patterns. YouTube's new feature allows parents to set limits on how much time teenagers spend scrolling through Shorts. In addition, YouTube is introducing new principles and a creator guide aimed at promoting age-appropriate content. The company has also added an updated sign-up experience that makes it easier for parents to create new accounts for their children.
YouTube Launches New Parental Controls
In a blog post on Wednesday, YouTube shared new updates that will help parents improve the viewing experience for teenage viewers. The platform now allows parents to set limits on the amount of time spent scrolling through YouTube Shorts. YouTube stated that parents will soon be able to set the Shorts feed limit to zero. With this update, parents can completely disable Shorts for a day or allow up to 60 minutes for entertainment during long car rides.
Parents can also choose short feed limits of 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour, or 2 hours. Additionally, parents with supervised YouTube accounts can set custom bedtime and break reminders.
Furthermore, YouTube says it is introducing new principles and a creator guide to show teenagers "fun, age-appropriate, high-quality, and informative" content. Under this initiative, YouTube will suggest videos from Khan Academy, CrashCourse, and TED-Ed to teenagers. YouTube claims the new principles were developed in partnership with its Youth Advisory Committee and UCLA's Center for Scholars & Storytellers, and were supported by global experts from the American Psychological Association, Boston Children's Hospital's Digital Wellness Lab, and other global organizations.
YouTube will be offering an updated sign-up experience in the coming weeks. Through this process, the platform will place teenagers into protected under-18 accounts and allow parents to easily create a new kids' account and switch between accounts with a few taps in the mobile app.
