Samsung has introduced the Digital Home Key feature to make its smart home even smarter. This new technology will allow users to unlock their home door using their smartphone. This feature is integrated into Samsung Wallet and operates on the Aliro smart home standard. The company claims it will enhance both home security and smartness. In the technology world, it is being seen as an alternative to physical keys.

What is Digital Home Key?
Digital Home Key is a smart feature that allows users to unlock their home's smart locks using their phones. It works within Samsung Wallet and is based on the Aliro standard. This technology allows the door to be unlocked by tapping using NFC, while with UWB support, the lock can automatically open as soon as the user approaches the door. Samsung aims to further strengthen its smart home ecosystem by allowing the phone to act as the home's control hub.

Two years ago, a preview was shown.
Samsung teased this feature in 2024 and promised a rollout in 2025. However, the launch was delayed due to the delay in the Aliro standard. Now, the CSA's Aliro standard is ready, enabling smart locks to work with different phones. This is why Samsung has finally prepared the Digital Home Key for rollout, making smart lock integration much easier.

How will it work?
Users must first set up a compatible smart lock through SmartThings.

After setup is complete, the Digital Home Key can be added to Samsung Wallet.

Users can then choose between NFC or UWB, depending on their lock's support.

NFC requires a tap of the phone, while UWB simply requires approaching the door.

This process has been kept simple so that even the average user can use it without technical hassle.

Samsung's strong focus on security
Samsung says the company prioritized security with this feature. Digital Home Key is secured with the Samsung Knox security platform. The Home Key is securely stored on the phone, and the Wallet app offers biometric or PIN protection options. This means that even if the phone is lost, it won't be easy for unauthorized individuals to access the Home Key.

When will it be available, and which phones will be supported?
Samsung has stated that the Digital Home Key will be available on select smartphones starting in March, with UWB support coming in April. However, not all Galaxy phones will support this feature. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and above, as well as the Galaxy S22 Ultra and newer flagship devices, are said to be compatible. The company may add more devices in the future.
