What is DIGIPin?
DIGIPIN stands for Digital Postal Index Number. It is an open-source and interconnected digital addressing system developed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO's NRSC. Essentially, DIGIPIN can be described as a digital code used to identify any specific location. Rather than representing an entire locality or colony, it pinpoints a very small and precise spot on a map.
What are the Benefits of DIGIPin?
Greater Accuracy: Based on latitude and longitude coordinates, DIGIPin provides an absolutely precise location, whereas the standard 6-digit PIN code merely indicates a broad geographical area.
Alphanumeric Code: A DIGIPIN consists of a 10-character alphanumeric code (a combination of letters and numbers). The sequence is randomized, ensuring that the code for every single location remains distinct and unique.
GIS-Based: The system operates on Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, which further enhances the accuracy of location identification on a map.
How to Find Your DIGIPin?
To obtain your DIGIPin, visit the official India Post website at https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home.
On the portal, you will be prompted to provide your current location. As soon as you grant the portal access to your location, a 10-digit DigiPIN will appear on the screen.
You can share this 10-digit DigiPIN. Additionally, you will also be provided with an option to generate a QR code for it.
How to Use the DigiPIN?
As soon as you share your DigiPIN with someone, clicking on it will present the recipient with two options: "Open With Google Maps" and "Open With Mappls Maps." Clicking on either of these options will instantly reveal your precise location.
