The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a warning about fake DigiLocker apps available for download on several app stores. Digital India shared a post on X, in which the government advises DigiLocker users to check their authenticity before downloading such apps. Let's learn how to identify fake DigiLocker apps and the potential harm they can cause to users.
The X post states, "Fake DigiLocker apps are being used to defraud users and steal personal information. There is only one genuine DigiLocker app, released by the National e-Governance Division of the Government of India."
Users are advised to avoid apps made available by developers under generic names. The post further states, "Apps with similar icons or generic developer names should be avoided. Always double-check before downloading. Please share this information to keep other users safe."
In another X post, Digital India urged users to download the app from the official link available on the government website.
The post states, "If you have already installed a suspicious version, delete it immediately and change the password of the linked account. Download the app only from the official link available on the government website." The advisory warns that these fraudulent apps are designed to deceive users and can compromise sensitive personal information.
What is DigiLocker?
The DigiLocker app, developed as a government initiative under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), provides the facility to securely digitally store important documents such as Aadhaar, PAN card, driving license, vehicle registration, and education certificates. Given the need for these documents, installing fake versions can pose a significant threat to users' privacy and security. Given the increasing cases of cybercrime, the government is emphasizing the need for digital caution. Users should check the source of government apps before installing them. Users should be cautious when downloading apps. They should first verify the developer's name to ensure the app is authentic, as official apps are only released by the National e-Governance Division of the Government of India.
