Deepfake: Tampering with someone's image or voice will no longer be tolerated, Denmark has enacted a strict deepfake law..
The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) is also increasing the threat of deepfake content. New laws are being enacted in many countries to address deepfake content. According to reports from Copenhagen, the Danish government is introducing a new law that will protect citizens from AI-generated deepfake content. Fake videos, photos, and audio created using deepfake technology are spreading rapidly worldwide, posing a significant threat to the privacy and identity of ordinary people.
A 2021 incident triggered change.
In 2021, Danish game streamer Mary Watson suffered a major tragedy. An unknown account edited a photo from her vacation and created a deepfake depicting her nude. This incident sparked a nationwide discussion about digital identity security, and the government has now decided to take strict action.
What does the new law say?
Under the proposed law, the use and sharing of a person's voice, face, or personal characteristics without permission will be prohibited. Its purpose is to protect people from online insults, defamation, or the spread of misinformation. This law will grant every citizen copyright over their own face and voice, meaning no platform will be able to share such content without permission.
Strictness will also be imposed on major tech platforms.
Denmark's Culture Minister, Jakob Engel-Schmidt, stated that if any platform fails to remove deepfake content, it will face heavy fines. However, the law does not provide for jail time for ordinary social media users.
Experts say this initiative is one of the largest efforts taken globally against deepfakes and misinformation. Several European countries, including France and Ireland, have also expressed interest in this law.
