Bumble, a renowned app in the world of dating, is currently undergoing a major transformation. The company recently released its results for the first quarter of 2026, revealing a decline in the number of users subscribing to paid services on the app. While Bumble boasted 4 million paying users last year, that figure has now dropped by 21.1% to 3.2 million. However, rather than being alarmed by this decline, the company characterizes it as part of a deliberate strategic shift. The company states that, instead of focusing on simply amassing a large crowd, they are now prioritizing serious users—those who genuinely wish to meet someone special.

Although Bumble has seen a reduction in its user base and its total revenue has fallen by 14.1% to $212.4 million, there is a silver lining for the company. The average revenue generated per paying user has increased by approximately 9%. This indicates that the individuals currently utilizing the app are spending more on it than before. Furthermore, by cutting down on sales and marketing expenses, the company has successfully boosted its profitability. This quarter, the company reported a net profit of $52.6 million—a significant increase from the $19.8 million recorded during the same period last year.

Speaking to investors, Bumble Founder and CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd stated, "Over the past few months, the company has been undergoing a significant transformation." She explained that the company intentionally "reset" its member base. "We made a conscious decision to prioritize quality over quantity, ensuring that our platform is populated by active users with genuine intentions. While this decision may have resulted in lower user numbers, it has vastly improved the overall environment within our app."

**AI Set to Transform Dating**

Bumble is now phasing out its legacy systems to introduce a new, cloud-based AI system. The integration of Cloud and AI means that the app will now leverage powerful internet-based computers and artificial intelligence to assist users in finding partners better suited to their preferences. The company believes that the traditional method of merely swiping through profiles has become outdated, as users often fail to meet in real life even after a successful match.

To address this issue, Bumble has introduced a new AI matchmaker named 'Bee.' This feature analyzes user preferences, communication styles, and relationship aspirations to suggest compatible individuals. Furthermore, through a feature called 'Dates,' this AI will even explain to users *why* they are a good match for one another. The company's objective is to encourage users to move beyond in-app chatting and actually meet for real-life dates. To facilitate this, user profiles will now be displayed in greater detail, enabling you to gain a deeper understanding of the person on the other side.

**Increased Focus on Friendship and Groups**

Beyond just dating, Bumble is now making significant strides in facilitating friendships as well. The company offers a companion app called Bumble BFF, where users can forge new friendships. A new feature named 'Groups' has been added to this platform, allowing users to chat collectively or plan events together. According to Whitney Wolfe Herd, this feature is gaining immense popularity among Gen Z women, with the number of active users nearly doubling between December and March. Bumble anticipates that by the final quarter of the year—once all these new updates have been rolled out globally—it will witness a renewed surge in both user growth and revenue.
