'Dangerous files' circulating on WhatsApp; clicking them could hack your system..
Hackers in several countries are targeting WhatsApp users through a malware campaign. Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky discovered a group using WhatsApp accounts to distribute malicious attachments. Users across multiple countries have been affected by this malware. Kaspersky researchers state that attackers are using previously compromised WhatsApp accounts to send malicious attachments that appear to come from known contacts. The files are named to resemble business documents.
**How the malware campaign targets people**
Kaspersky’s Global Research and Analysis Team (GReAT) has identified a malware distribution campaign targeting users of WhatsApp Desktop and WhatsApp Web. Attackers target users by sending dangerous file attachments via direct messages. The company reports that this campaign utilizes compromised WhatsApp accounts to spread malicious VBScript files.
The report includes screenshots of WhatsApp messages containing VBScript files, showing that hackers have named the files to look like business documents. The moment you click on or open the file, the malware infiltrates your system.
Kaspersky researchers note that the file names appear in English as well as other languages (such as Portuguese, French, and German). The cybersecurity firm claims that people in several countries—including Malaysia, Brazil, and Singapore—have been the primary targets. Since this type of malware could potentially reach India and target you, it is crucial to exercise caution and avoid clicking on attachments received from unknown numbers on WhatsApp.
