D2M Technology: A new technology is coming soon for feature phone users. This is Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) broadcasting. This technology will allow live sports, movies, and web series to be viewed on feature phones even without internet. This feature will be available on feature phones priced around ₹2,000 to ₹2,500. These phones will use chipsets from Saankhya Labs. This technology will be implemented across India. This could also impact the revenue of telecom companies like Jio and Airtel. Let's learn more about this new technology.

Lava develops D2M-equipped phones.
Lava and HMD have developed feature phones priced between ₹2,000 and ₹2,500 that are equipped with D2M capability (broadcasting technology). These phones use chipsets designed by Saankhya Labs. These phones are currently prototypes.

What is D2M technology?
For your information, D2M is a technology that delivers multimedia content to mobile phones. It doesn't require internet access. The Ministry of Communications has highlighted several key features of D2M. One of its key features is that it's built specifically for mobile phones and delivers content seamlessly. It's hybrid broadcasting, which means it can deliver real-time and on-demand content. Additionally, interactive services are also possible.

Previously, D2M technology was used exclusively for emergency alerts and disaster management. Now, its power will be harnessed. The government says that D2M can deliver information directly to mobile phones, eliminating network stress. Simply put, even in areas with weak networks, people will be able to easily watch broadcasts.

How does D2M technology work?

It works similarly to FM radio, where a receiver picks up the transmitted signal. It is also similar to direct-to-home (DTH) broadcasting, in which a dish antenna receives signals directly from a satellite and transmits them to a receiver such as a set-top box.

Current Devices Do Not Support
A paper published in 2022 by IIT Kanpur, titled "D2M Broadcast 5G Broadband Convergence Roadmap for India," stated that current mobile devices do not support D2M technology. To make these devices compatible, a separate baseband processing unit will be required, along with an antenna, a low-noise amplifier, a baseband filter, and a receiver.

Telecom Companies May Lose
This technology could harm telecom companies like Airtel and Jio, as people recharge with plans with more mobile data to view online content. These plans are quite expensive. Furthermore, with the introduction of D2M technology, people will no longer need internet access. This could negatively impact telecom companies' revenue.

Crores of rupees will be invested.
An industry expert cited in the report estimated that an investment of approximately ₹8,000 crore would be required to launch a nationwide D2M network. According to media reports, this could be implemented soon.
