D2D Service: Elon Musk's Starlink suffers a setback! The D2D service faces a hurdle; here's the full story..
There has been much discussion about Starlink launching its service in India soon, but Elon Musk now faces another major challenge. Everyone is waiting for the Starlink service to begin, and the question on everyone's mind is, when will Elon Musk finally launch the service? To move forward, the company needs to obtain new approvals from the space regulator IN-SPACe for technologies like D2D (Direct-to-Device) connectivity. It's important to note that the company has only received permission for basic broadband from space services in India so far. This means the D2D license is currently a sticking point, causing delays in the service rollout.
Starlink Denied Gen-2 Approval
Government officials say that Starlink had applied for approval for both Gen-1 and Gen-2 satellite constellations to launch its service in India, but IN-SPACe has only approved the Gen-1 constellation so far. The company's Gen-2 constellation approval was rejected because some frequency bands are not currently permitted in India. An official stated that Gen-2 includes different spectrums and features, and some of these are not currently compliant with Indian regulations. This is why approval for the Gen-2 constellation was denied.
Starlink Will Have to Reapply
According to an Economic Times report, IN-SPACe Chairman Pawan Kumar Goenka stated that Starlink did not receive Gen-2 clearance. When the company applied 3 to 4 years ago, D2D technology was not as developed, but now Gen-2 includes several advanced features, including D2D. Therefore, the company can reapply for approval.
