Cyber Safety: New Rule Brings Major Relief for Online Fraud Victims in Delhi

Online scams continue to rise across the country, leaving thousands of people worried about their money and digital safety. To address this growing problem, authorities in the national capital have introduced a major change that will significantly help victims of cyber fraud. Starting 1 November, Delhi Police will now register an e-FIR for any online financial fraud involving ₹1 lakh or more, making the entire process faster, simpler, and more accessible for everyone.

Earlier, the option to file an e-FIR was available only for cases where the fraud amount exceeded ₹10 lakh. This meant many victims—especially middle-class users and small investors—struggled to get formal cases registered for smaller losses. With the new decision, even individuals who lose lower amounts due to online scams will have their complaints officially recorded without unnecessary delays or repeated visits to police stations.

A Faster and More Inclusive Complaint System

According to Delhi Police, the new rule aims to make cybercrime reporting smoother and more efficient. Special Commissioner of Police (Crime), Devesh Chandra Srivastava, confirmed that victims no longer need to depend solely on helpline number 1930 to file a complaint.

Instead, every one of the 225 police stations across Delhi will have an integrated cyber helpdesk where victims can directly report fraud. Once a complaint involving ₹1 lakh or more is submitted, the e-FIR will be generated automatically through the system.

This change will especially help those who previously faced delays or difficulty in getting smaller fraud cases formally registered. By broadening the scope of e-FIR registration, Delhi Police hopes to ensure that more victims receive timely support and quicker access to investigation teams.

How to File a Cyber Fraud Complaint in Delhi

Victims of online financial fraud will now have three clear options for submitting their complaint:

1. Call the National Cyber Helpline – 1930

When you dial 1930, your complaint will be recorded on the cybercrime portal. If the fraud amount is ₹1 lakh or more, the system will automatically convert it into an e-FIR.

2. File a Complaint Online Through the Delhi Police Portal

Victims can also visit the official Delhi Police website and lodge an e-FIR directly through the online reporting system. This ensures complete convenience without the need to visit a police station.

3. Visit Any Nearby Police Station

Every police station in Delhi now has a dedicated cyber helpdesk. You can walk in, explain your complaint, and the staff will immediately register it in the system.

Srivastava added that while the 1930 helpline already has 20 call-takers, staff members at every police station will now also assist victims. This expanded support network will help speed up complaint registration and reduce waiting time.

Who Will Handle the Investigation?

Delhi Police has also clarified how different cases will be assigned based on the fraud amount:

  • ₹1 lakh to ₹25 lakh: Investigation will be handled by the local police station.

  • ₹25 lakh to ₹50 lakh: The Crime Branch will take over these cases.

  • Above ₹50 lakh: The Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit will manage the investigation.

Joint Commissioner of Police (IFSO), Rajneesh Gupta, revealed that the city receives nearly 300 cyber fraud complaints daily. The updated system will ensure quicker case registration and faster investigation processes, helping prevent delays that often frustrate victims.

A Step Toward Better Cyber Safety in the Capital

Delhi Police believes that this newly expanded e-FIR mechanism will not only simplify the complaint-filing process but also strengthen the city’s fight against cybercrime. With faster registrations, clearer procedures, and dedicated investigation teams, authorities aim to curb the growing number of digital frauds and provide timely assistance to affected citizens.
