Crores of rupees are being wiped out by just one mistake—what is this crypto wallet scam, and how can you protect yourself from it?
Seed Phrase Scam: In this era of digitalization, opportunities to earn from cryptocurrency are growing, but the traps set by scammers are spreading just as rapidly. Nowadays, "crypto wallet drain" scams are being used to target holders of digital assets. The primary weapon in this fraud is a moment of carelessness on the user's part. If you deal in cryptocurrency, you must understand that the security of your wallet hinges on just 12 words.
Cryptocurrency Fraud: What is a seed phrase, and why is it important?
A seed phrase is a recovery code consisting of 12 words (or 24 words in some wallets), which serves as the "master key" to the crypto wallet. With this phrase, anyone can access the wallet on a different device and gain full control over all the cryptocurrency assets held within it. In other words, the seed phrase is not merely a password; it is the key to total ownership of your wallet.
Online Scam: How do scammers target people?
Cyber fraudsters often contact individuals by posing as employees of crypto exchanges, wallet services, or security teams. They claim there is a security issue with your wallet or that your account is at risk. Hearing this causes panic, and the scammer then sends a link to a fake website or asks the victim to enter their seed phrase into a fraudulent app. As soon as the victim enters their seed phrase, the scammers gain full control of the wallet.
Wallet Drainer: How can a wallet be emptied in seconds?
Once they obtain the seed phrase, scammers recover your wallet on their own device. They then transfer the crypto assets to a different wallet.
Since most cryptocurrency transactions on the blockchain are irreversible, recovering the assets once they have been transferred is extremely difficult.
Crypto Wallet Safety: How can you avoid this scam? The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C)—also known as 'Cyber Dost'—under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, has issued a warning to the public regarding this scam. According to Cyber Dost, keep the following points in mind when using a crypto wallet:
No genuine crypto app or wallet service will ever ask for your seed phrase.
Do not share any information out of panic caused by messages claiming security alerts, wallet verification, or account suspension.
Do not click on any unknown links or suspicious websites.
Never share your seed phrase with any individual, website, app, or in a chat.
Cyber Security: What to do in case of cyber fraud?
If you inadvertently fall victim to a crypto scam, call the 1930 helpline without delay. Additionally, immediately file a complaint on the Government of India's National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Reporting the incident promptly can assist investigative agencies in taking action.
