Create a digital lookalike using your own photos and voice! Google Gemini introduces a 'Personal Avatar' feature..
Google has introduced a 'Personal Avatar' feature for Gemini users. This feature allows users to create an AI avatar based on their own appearance and voice, which can then be used to generate photos and videos. Furthermore, users can share their avatar with friends, family members, and others.
Once shared, these individuals can also incorporate the avatar into their own AI creations—provided they have obtained permission from the avatar's owner.
How does the Gemini 'Personal Avatar' feature work?
Google’s new 'Personal Avatar' feature enables users to create AI content that reflects their own identity. To achieve this, the company has utilized 'Nano Banana' for image generation and 'Gemini Omni' for video creation.
With this feature, users can include an avatar—modeled after their own appearance and voice—alongside friends, family, or colleagues within a single AI-generated image or video. If someone else wishes to use your avatar in their own creations, they must first secure your permission.
According to Google, to share an avatar, a user must send an invitation to the recipient's Gmail address. The recipient must then accept this invitation before they can begin using the avatar in their own AI-generated photos and videos.
Full control over avatar sharing
Google has also included options for managing privacy and permissions within this feature. The owner of the avatar can navigate to their Gemini settings to determine who is granted access and for how long that access remains valid.
Users can set an expiration date for access or revoke permission at any time. Once permission is withdrawn, the other person will no longer be able to create new content using that avatar; however, this will not affect any photos or videos that were already created.
Who can use this feature?
Currently, the Gemini 'Personal Avatar' feature is available to users aged 18 and older who have a personal Google account. At present, it supports only the English language. Additionally, this feature is not available in the UK, the European Economic Area (EEA), or Switzerland.
It is important to note that creating videos using a 'Personal Avatar' requires a Google AI plan.
How to create your Personal Avatar:
To create an avatar, users must first record their face and voice. This process can be initiated on a computer; the recording can then be completed on a mobile device or tablet by scanning a QR code displayed on the screen.
For optimal results, Google recommends recording in a quiet environment with good lighting. Your face must be clearly visible during the recording.
Users can delete their avatar—along with the associated selfies and voice recordings—via their Google Account settings. However, please note that this will not remove any images or videos that have already been created or published. To use this feature again, you will need to record a new avatar.
