Could you have accidentally downloaded a fake WhatsApp, thinking it was the real one? Here’s how to stay safe..
Important news has emerged for WhatsApp users. A third-party app masquerading as "WhatsApp Messenger" was discovered on the Google Play Store, having been downloaded over 500,000 times. Alarmingly, the app appeared as a "sponsored" listing above the official WhatsApp app in search results, putting users who download apps in a hurry at risk of being deceived.
A user on Reddit first drew attention to this app, after which *Android Authority* and *The Verge* published reports on the matter. According to a report by *The Verge* on October 16, the app was still present on the Google Play Store at that time. Google did not provide an immediate response regarding the issue.
How did a fake app get listed under the name "WhatsApp"?
According to reports, the suspicious app appeared on the Google Play Store under the name "WhatsApp Messenger" and was published by a developer identified as "Agment Assets sallu." No other apps were found listed under this developer's name. To mislead users, the app utilized icons, screenshots, and descriptions that closely resembled those of the official WhatsApp—making it difficult to distinguish the genuine app based solely on its name and logo.
In contrast, the official WhatsApp app is published by "WhatsApp LLC." As per *The Verge*, the official app has over 10 billion downloads, carries an "Editor's Choice" badge on the Google Play Store, and has garnered more than 246 million reviews. *Android Authority* suggested that the suspicious app might have leveraged the Google Play Store's "Early Access" program; if so, the limited number of public reviews would have meant fewer opportunities for users to see warnings from others.
How can you identify the genuine app on the Google Play Store?
Always check the developer's name before downloading any app. For WhatsApp Messenger, the official developer should be listed as WhatsApp LLC. Additionally, pay attention to details such as the number of downloads, user reviews, and other provided information.
Do not assume an app is safe simply because it appears at the top of search results. A sponsored listing does not imply that an app is official. Therefore, avoid installing an app based solely on its name, icon, or its appearance at the top of an advertisement.
What should you do if you have downloaded a fake version of WhatsApp?
If you suspect that you have installed a fraudulent WhatsApp app, remove it from your phone immediately. Afterward, go to your phone's settings to check what permissions were granted to that app. Revoke these permissions as necessary and verify the overall security of your device.
If you have entered your account information or a WhatsApp verification code into such an app, take immediate steps to secure your account. Monitor your WhatsApp account for any login activity or security-related events. Most importantly, never share your WhatsApp registration code with anyone. This incident serves as a reminder that not every app found on an official app store is trustworthy. It is, therefore, essential to verify the developer and other relevant details before downloading any application.
