CNAP vs Truecaller: How is the CNAP system different from and better than Truecaller? Let's clear up the confusion here..
Everyone is bothered by calls from unknown numbers, which is why people have relied on third-party apps (like Truecaller) for years to get information ranging from spam alerts to caller names. Truecaller is now facing a challenge from a system built directly into the telecom network. India's Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) framework will work in conjunction with strict SIM-binding rules. This indicates a shift in how caller identification works; while third-party apps provide caller name information based on their databases, India's new framework is being implemented within an operator-controlled infrastructure.
CNAP is More Reliable
According to Telecom Talk, CNAP displays the caller's registered name, which was provided during KYC verification when the SIM was issued. This information is delivered directly through the mobile network at the time of the incoming call. Unlike app-based caller ID systems, CNAP does not rely on internet connectivity, contact syncing, or user-created labels. The name displayed on the screen reflects the identity recorded in the official telecom database, making it difficult to hide or alter.
On the other hand, Truecaller's database displays the caller's name as provided when the account was created. There is no verification of whether the correct name was provided during account creation. Furthermore, this name can be changed in the account settings. Therefore, the government's CNAP will prove to be more reliable for caller identification.
Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL have launched CNAP services in these states.
CNAP's reach is gradually expanding, but telecom operators have already activated or tested this feature in several areas. Reliance Jio has the largest live network, as the company has launched CNAP in Kerala, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh East and West, Bihar, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Assam, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Odisha.
Bharti Airtel is currently testing CNAP in Gujarat, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir. Vodafone Idea has already launched CNAP in Maharashtra. BSNL has reported limited availability in West Bengal, indicating that the deployment is in its initial stages. This gradual rollout suggests that the operators want to verify accuracy, network performance, and user experience before a large-scale expansion.
