Claude AI will now connect directly to bank accounts and credit cards—how will it handle users' money?
As AI tools become an increasingly integral part of our daily lives, their capabilities are also expanding. While the use of AI was previously limited to tasks like writing text, coding, or generating images, it can now also assist in managing your bank accounts. Anthropic has introduced a feature called "Personal Finance" within its AI, Claude. This new functionality allows users to connect their bank accounts and credit cards directly to Claude AI. Once connected, the AI tool can help track your expenses, analyze your spending patterns, and provide financial guidance.
Now, AI will tell you where and how much you are spending.
With this feature, users can link their bank account and credit card information to Claude. The AI can then analyze bank statements to track expenses and categorize them accordingly. Furthermore, the company claims that it can assist in analyzing spending habits and calculating interest on loans.
According to Anthropic, Claude will provide users with information regarding their balances and transactions using natural, conversational language. If a financial term is difficult to understand, the AI can explain it in simpler terms.
How can users access this feature?
To use this feature, users must connect their bank or credit card accounts to Claude AI via a financial technology platform called "Plaid." Once the connection is established, the AI will only have access to the specific accounts chosen by the user.
When an account is connected, Claude can access details such as the bank and account name, account type, the last four digits of the account number, available balance, credit limit, and transaction history dating back up to two years. Anthropic states that users will not need to share their banking passwords directly with Claude AI to use this feature. Once a bank account is linked, users can access a 'Personal Finance Hub' within Claude AI to ask questions about their finances—for example, "Where did I spend my money this month?" In response, Claude can analyze transactions across all linked accounts to provide a detailed breakdown of expenses. It will categorize these expenditures, helping users understand where the bulk of their money is being spent.
Furthermore, the AI can analyze spending patterns. For instance, if a user is planning a vacation, they could ask Claude whether such an expense is advisable given their current financial situation.
What will this feature do?
This feature operates within specific limitations; it does not grant the AI the authority to execute financial transactions. It is strictly a 'read-only' tool—meaning the AI can view account balances, transaction history, and spending details, but it cannot initiate payments on the user's behalf.
Additionally, it cannot transfer funds to others or perform any other types of financial transactions. Its primary purpose is to help users gain insight into their financial status and make better-informed financial decisions.
Anthropic is currently rolling out this personal finance feature in the United States as a beta version. It is presently available to subscribers of Claude Pro, Max, and Ultra plans; therefore, it is not yet accessible to all Claude users.
