WhatsApp will soon grant children and pre-teenagers permission to chat with friends, though this functionality will be entirely subject to parental controls. Here is what you need to know:

WhatsApp is now extending permission to children and pre-teenagers to use its messaging app. Amidst growing concerns regarding children's safety on the internet, a significant transformation is underway for the WhatsApp platform. Meta is implementing major changes to a child-friendly version of WhatsApp; this version will function exclusively under parental supervision and will lack several features typically found in the standard version of the app.

In several countries, restrictions are being imposed on social media apps for children. Furthermore, parents remain concerned about the potential misuse of these platforms—particularly WhatsApp—where users can connect with one another solely via a phone number. Online addiction also stands as a major factor necessitating better regulation of such apps, and WhatsApp is actively taking steps in this direction.

How to Set Up WhatsApp for Children Under 13 Years of Age

The concept of parental controls is not new, and WhatsApp is now integrating this existing system into its own platform. Here is a breakdown of how WhatsApp will be made available to pre-teenagers and how users can utilize this feature:

You will need to have both the parent's and the child's devices in close proximity to one another.

Scan the QR code displayed on the WhatsApp interface running on your child's phone.

The device linking process will then be successfully completed.

Once the linking is finalized, the primary functionality comes into play. Parents will gain control over all activity occurring on their child's app; additionally, they will be granted the ability to access the content within the account and manage its privacy settings. They can determine who is permitted to chat with the child's account and will even retain control over which groups their child is allowed to join on WhatsApp. The version of WhatsApp designed for children does not include features such as Channels, Status updates, disappearing chats, or "View Once" photos. WhatsApp asserts that, with the exception of content involving parents, all other content is end-to-end encrypted.

An age limit has been established for children's accounts, and WhatsApp has implemented a process through which these users will be offered the option to convert their accounts into standard profiles, free from any parental controls.
