ChatGPT Market Share: ChatGPT Remains the Leader, but Gemini and Claude Are Closing the Gap Fas
ChatGPT Market Share: ChatGPT remains the largest platform in the AI market, but Gemini and Claude are rapidly increasing their market share, making the competition fiercer than ever.
ChatGPT Market Share: Who isn't familiar with OpenAI's ChatGPT in the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI)? It remains the biggest name in the field today, though it is now facing stiff competition. According to analytics firm Sensor Tower's "State of AI Report 2026," ChatGPT's market share has dropped below 50% for the first time.
In May 2026, ChatGPT's share stood at 46.4%, whereas it had been above 50% as recently as January. A major reason for this shift is that people are increasingly using other AI assistants tailored to specific needs. In this era of AI, Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, and xAI's Grok are rapidly carving out their own space.
Gemini and Claude Pick Up Pace; User Base Grows Rapidly
According to the report, Google Gemini's market share has risen to 27.7%, while Claude has secured a 10.3% share. Meanwhile, other platforms like Grok, Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Meta AI currently hold less than a 5% share. Despite this, ChatGPT remains the world's most widely used AI assistant, boasting over 1.1 billion monthly active users.
Gemini has approximately 662 million monthly users, and Claude has around 245 million. Notably, earlier this year, ChatGPT became the fastest app to surpass the milestone of 1 billion monthly users. However, it is now evident that no single company will dominate the AI landscape, and competition will continue to intensify.
Choosing AI Based on Needs
According to a TechCrunch report, the way people use these tools is also evolving. While many users previously relied on a single AI platform, they are now utilizing different AI tools for specific tasks. Some opt for Gemini for superior search capabilities, others use ChatGPT for writing and research, and some turn to Claude for its unique features. The report also notes that some users uninstalled the app following news in February regarding OpenAI's partnership with the US Department of Defense.
Rapidly Growing AI App Market
The AI industry as a whole is expanding rapidly. Sensor Tower projects that in the first half of 2026, AI apps could reach approximately 2.3 billion downloads and generate over $4.2 billion in revenue. For comparison, the revenue figure stood at $1.83 billion during the same period last year. Although Asia saw a 3.3% decline in downloads—driven by trends in China and India—the region remains the leader in terms of total download volume.
