ChatGPT Could Get an 'Adult Mode'! Will AI Now Engage in Adult Conversations? Find Out What the Company Says..
OpenAI has proposed adding a new feature to its chatbot, ChatGPT, a move that has sparked considerable debate on social media. This is because the feature is named 'Adult Mode.' Through this feature, adult users could be permitted to engage in text-based conversations of an adult nature with the chatbot.
Discussions regarding this feature have been ongoing within OpenAI for several months, and company experts have even issued warnings regarding its potential risks. They believe that if such a feature is implemented, it could have a detrimental effect on users' mental and emotional well-being, particularly among the younger or teenage generations.
According to reports, during a meeting held in January 2026, several OpenAI members raised serious objections to this proposal. These members include experts in psychology and neuroscience who advise the company on the societal implications of its AI systems. These experts argue that if such adult-oriented conversations with the chatbot are permitted, some individuals may develop an excessive dependency on the technology. This, in turn, could negatively impact their real-world relationships and mental health.
Meanwhile, to address this issue, OpenAI is developing a specialized age-verification system designed to ensure that underage users cannot access adult-oriented conversations. However, this system currently misidentifies minors as adults in approximately 12 percent of cases. Given that millions of underage users access ChatGPT every week, even such a seemingly minor error could inadvertently grant a significant number of young people access to the Adult Mode.
The company also intends to impose strict limitations on this feature. According to the proposal, Adult Mode will be restricted solely to text-based interactions, while any discussions involving illicit subjects will be strictly prohibited. For instance, conversations involving minors or any content related to coercion will be completely blocked. Furthermore, the generation of adult-oriented images, videos, or audio content will not be permitted.
OpenAI had originally planned to launch this Adult Mode feature in early 2026; however, its release has now been postponed for the time being. The company states that the reason for this delay is technical challenges and security-related concerns.
