How does the age prediction system work?
For quite some time, AI chatbots have been urged to introduce a feature that provides chatbot functionalities based on the user's age, for the safety of teenagers. This new age prediction feature will use account-related information and user behavior to determine age.

It also considers how long the account has been active, how the user uses it over time, and when they are typically active. The age prediction system also takes into account the age information previously provided by the user.

No need for repeated age verification
OpenAI says that this method eliminates the need for repeatedly asking for age or constantly verifying identity. When age information is clear, ChatGPT provides a safer experience. If the model suspects that the account belongs to a minor, the platform automatically implements additional safety measures.

These things will be restricted
This reduces the risk of exposure to potentially harmful content for teenagers. It reduces contact and also bans several things, including graphic violence, bloody images, and self-harming content. The system also restricts sexual or violent role-playing and viral challenges that could encourage risky behavior. Furthermore, it blocks content that promotes body shaming. OpenAI says that child development experts assisted in making these decisions.

Age Verification Available
OpenAI acknowledges that automated systems can make mistakes. Therefore, users who are mistakenly identified as being under 18 can gain full access to ChatGPT by undergoing age verification. This process involves a selfie-based verification using Persona. They can access this feature by going to their account settings.

Parental Controls Introduced
Persona already supports identity verification for other platforms like Roblox. OpenAI says that users can check whether safety measures are applied to their account and initiate verification through ChatGPT settings. Additionally, OpenAI recently introduced parental controls, which allow parents to determine how teenagers use ChatGPT.
