BHIM App Transactions Triple in 11 Months as Digital Payments Gain Momentum Across India
India's digital payments ecosystem continues to expand rapidly, and the BHIM Payments App is emerging as one of the biggest beneficiaries of this trend. According to data released by NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSL), the platform recorded a remarkable surge in transaction volumes over the past year, reflecting growing consumer trust in digital payment solutions.
Between June 2025 and May 2026, monthly transactions on the BHIM app increased more than threefold, highlighting the country's accelerating shift toward cashless payments for everyday purchases.
Monthly Transactions Jump Over Three Times
Official figures show that BHIM processed approximately 79.6 million transactions in June 2025. By May 2026, that number had surged to 244 million transactions per month.
The impressive growth demonstrates the increasing adoption of UPI-based payments among consumers, merchants, and small businesses across the country. Industry observers believe the rise has been fueled by greater smartphone penetration, wider merchant acceptance, and increasing confidence in secure digital payment systems.
₹26,952 Crore Worth of Payments Processed
The platform's growth was not limited to transaction volume alone. In May 2026, BHIM processed transactions worth ₹26,952 crore, underscoring its expanding role in India's digital economy.
The figures indicate that users are relying on the app for both small daily purchases and larger financial transactions, further strengthening its position in the country's payments landscape.
Grocery Stores Lead Merchant Transactions
Data from May 2026 revealed that grocery stores accounted for the largest share of merchant payments made through BHIM, particularly in Telangana.
The merchant category-wise breakup showed:
-
Grocery stores: 23.9%
-
Food outlets and restaurants: 18.1%
-
Quick commerce services: 11.6%
These numbers suggest that consumers increasingly prefer digital payments for routine purchases such as groceries, meals, and instant delivery services.
Digital Payments Becoming Part of Everyday Life
The continued growth of BHIM reflects a broader transformation in consumer behavior. From neighborhood grocery shops to restaurants and online delivery platforms, digital payment methods have become a preferred choice due to their speed, convenience, and security.
Government initiatives promoting digital transactions, combined with the widespread success of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), have further accelerated adoption across urban and semi-urban regions.
Strong Outlook for Future Growth
With India's digital economy expanding rapidly and more merchants embracing cashless payment options, BHIM is expected to continue its growth trajectory. Industry experts believe increasing financial inclusion, improved digital infrastructure, and rising smartphone usage will drive even higher transaction volumes in the coming years.
As digital payments become an integral part of daily life, BHIM's strong performance highlights the growing confidence of Indian consumers in secure and convenient payment technologies.
