In today's digital age, WhatsApp is no longer just a medium for chatting; it has become a crucial platform for personal information, banking details, and private conversations. Cyber fraudsters exploit people's negligence to hijack WhatsApp accounts and then use those accounts to solicit money or sensitive information from friends and family. To address this, the Madhya Pradesh Police has shared important information on how to prevent WhatsApp accounts from being hacked—details that everyone should be aware of.

The Madhya Pradesh Police posted about WhatsApp account hacking on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle to raise public awareness. The post explains that hackers employ various methods to hijack accounts. The most common method involves sending phishing links; clicking on them can lead to the theft of the user's information.

Additionally, hackers use fake calls or messages to obtain OTPs (One-Time Passwords), often deceiving users by posing as customer care representatives or acquaintances. In some instances, accounts are accessed via fraudulent apps or portals. Once an account is compromised, fraudsters can message your contacts to ask for money. These messages often appear so authentic that people transfer money without a second thought, resulting in financial loss.

How to protect your WhatsApp from hackers:
Enable Two-Step Verification: This is the most effective security measure for your account. To activate it, go to WhatsApp Settings > Account > Two-Step Verification and set a 6-digit PIN.

Check Linked Devices: Periodically verify that your account is not active on any other computer or mobile device. To do this, tap the three dots (⋮) on the WhatsApp home screen and select 'Linked Devices'. Immediately log out of any unrecognized devices.

Do not click on suspicious links: Avoid clicking on links or opening PDF/APK files from unknown numbers that promise tempting rewards or contain alarming messages, as these can install malware on your phone. Never share your OTP or verification code—no legitimate service provider or WhatsApp will ever ask for a registration code via chat.

Beware of call forwarding scams—fraudsters pose as customer care representatives and ask you to dial codes like *21# or *401#. These codes forward your messages and OTPs to their numbers; therefore, never dial unfamiliar codes.

In such a situation, immediately call the cybercrime helpline number 1930 or file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.
