Beware! Fake digital wedding invites can drain your bank account with one click—learn how to stay safe
Marriage Invitation Card Scam: Under the guise of digital wedding cards, cyber fraudsters are attempting to hack mobile phones by sending people fake links and .apk files—a threat that could potentially drain your entire bank account.
Marriage Invitation Card Scam: In today’s world, the advent of digital conveniences has made our lives significantly easier. Whether it involves sending money, making a purchase, or sending a wedding invitation to someone, we can now accomplish all these tasks from the comfort of our homes. Nowadays, many people send digital cards online to distant relatives and friends; however, cybercriminals are now exploiting this very practice. Consequently, a single wrong click could wipe out your entire life savings.
Therefore, always keep a few crucial points in mind.
Perhaps the most alarming aspect is that cyber fraud is no longer limited to unknown links alone; digital wedding cards sent in the name of people you know have also emerged as a new method for cyber scams. One wrong click could hand over control of your mobile device directly to hackers. In light of this, the Rajasthan Police recently issued an appeal on the social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), urging the public to remain vigilant.

How Does This Scam Work?
According to the Rajasthan Police, cybercriminals are sending suspicious .apk files and unknown links via WhatsApp, disguised as “Marriage Cards” or wedding invitations. Although these files visually resemble standard digital wedding cards, they actually harbor malicious software; victims are deceived into believing they are merely opening a normal digital invitation. The moment a person downloads or opens such a file, hackers gain unauthorized access to their phone.
Once access is established, the fraudsters can:
Seize complete control of the mobile device.
Steal personal information.
Extract banking details.
Intercept and read OTPs (One-Time Passwords) and text messages.
How Can You Keep Yourself Safe?
Keep these essential points in mind before opening any digital card:
Do not immediately open a card received from an unknown number.
Refrain from downloading any suspicious .apk files.
Always carefully examine and verify a link before clicking on it. Verify the identity of the sender before opening the card.
Remember to install only trusted applications on your device.
Important Note: Genuine wedding cards are typically received in PDF, image, or standard text message formats—not as .apk files.
What to do if you fall victim to cyber fraud?
If you or someone you know falls victim to this type of fraud, report it immediately.
