Befriending AI Can Lead to Loneliness; It Also Has a Negative Impact on the Mind
AI Tools Risk: Excessive use of AI tools can lead to feelings of isolation in individuals. A new study reveals that this also has an adverse effect on mental health.
AI Tools Risk: AI tools are gradually carving out a significant space in our lives. From personal matters to professional tasks, people are now seeking the assistance of AI tools in every aspect. Due to their continuously increasing usage, many individuals develop an emotional attachment to these tools. In one instance, a woman even went so far as to "marry" a virtual partner created by AI. Recent research has highlighted the various hidden psychological and social risks associated with AI tools. Excessive reliance on these tools carries the risk of leading to profound loneliness. Therefore, it is crucial to use them with caution.
Befriending AI Can Impact Real-World Relationships
A study conducted by IIM Lucknow has revealed that becoming overly emotionally attached to AI companions can negatively impact real-world relationships and mental health. Researchers note that with the advent of AI tools, the way people communicate and seek emotional support has undergone a transformation. These tools are marketed as sources of comfort, companionship, and emotional engagement; however, they can exert a significant influence on user behavior and psychology. The researchers pointed out that, in search of emotional comfort, many people are now turning to AI systems instead of other human beings. Consequently, they miss out on real-life interactions with people. The study further indicated that numerous users are becoming increasingly dependent on AI tools for emotional regulation and mental health support. If this trend persists over an extended period, it could prove to be dangerous.
Even 10 Minutes of AI Tool Usage Can Be Risky
A few months ago, another study conducted jointly by Carnegie Mellon University, MIT, the University of Oxford, and UCLA revealed that using AI chatbots—even for a short duration—can render people mentally lazy. Researchers have indicated that even a minimal amount of assistance from AI diminishes human cognitive abilities. Consequently, individuals become unable to solve problems on their own; if tasks become even slightly difficult, they simply give up. Once people become accustomed to receiving answers from AI, they are no longer willing to struggle to find solutions to challenges independently. The human brain is paying a heavy price in exchange for the assistance provided by AI. Users of AI are giving up much sooner than those who do not have access to this technology.
