Google has introduced two major updates to its AI-powered video creation platform, Google Vids, significantly enhancing capabilities within the AI ​​video space. Notably, these changes arrive in the tech world at a time when major players like OpenAI's Sora have stalled. Alongside this, the company has introduced a new AI-powered video generation and editing tool called Gemini Omni within Google Vids. Additionally, a "Personal Avatars" feature has been added, allowing users to create a digital version of themselves for videos without ever stepping in front of a camera.

This update elevates Google Vids beyond its role as a mere workplace presentation tool, moving it closer to becoming a comprehensive AI video creation platform. These new features are currently available to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers, as well as eligible Google Workspace business customers.

Create and edit videos using simple prompts
At the heart of this update is Gemini Omni, Google's multimodal AI model designed for video creation. Instead of manually editing clips, users can now describe their preferences using natural language and optionally upload reference images, such as photos or sketches. Gemini Omni then combines these inputs to generate a video that aligns with the prompt.

Google states that this AI can also edit existing videos. Users can simply type instructions to change backgrounds, improve lighting, add visual effects, or make other modifications. Unlike many other AI tools that require restarting the entire process after every edit, Gemini Omni supports step-by-step editing. This allows creators to refine their videos without having to generate them from scratch repeatedly.

The second major change is the introduction of Personal Avatars. This feature allows users to create an AI-generated digital avatar—which looks and speaks exactly like them—by simply uploading a selfie and a short voice recording. Once the avatar is created, users need only type a script, and their AI avatar delivers the entire message without the need for a live recording.

Google states that these avatars are linked to the account owner's Google account and can only reflect that specific user's appearance. Access to this feature is currently limited to users aged 18 and older in supported regions.

To enhance transparency regarding AI-generated content, every video created using these tools will include an invisible SynthID digital watermark, enabling the identification of AI-generated videos.

This latest update further strengthens Google's position in AI-powered content creation. By integrating AI video generation, editing, and digital avatar capabilities into the Google Workspace ecosystem, Google Vids is now directly competing with platforms such as HeyGen, Synthesia, Captions, and D-ID.
