Nowadays, to save mobile data, people often connect their phones to free Wi-Fi immediately upon arriving at places like metros, airports, hotels, cafes, and shopping malls. While not every free Wi-Fi network is dangerous, connecting to an unknown or unsecured network without verification can pose a significant threat to your online safety and privacy. Cybercriminals exploit public spaces to steal personal information and banking credentials through fake Wi-Fi hotspots.

1. Beware of fake Wi-Fi networks
Evil Twin Attack: Hackers set up their own Wi-Fi networks with names resembling those of legitimate networks at popular cafes or airports.
Precaution: Users may inadvertently connect to these fake networks. Therefore, before connecting to any public Wi-Fi, always ask the staff for the correct network name and password.

2. Seeing 'HTTPS' does not guarantee complete security
Network vs. Website: Wi-Fi network security and website security are two different things.
Pop-up Fraud: If a suspicious pop-up or webpage suddenly asks for your password, bank details, or credit card information upon connecting to Wi-Fi, close that window immediately.

3. Never perform banking activities on public Wi-Fi
Banking and Passwords: Avoid using net banking, UPI transfers, or entering credit card details on free networks.
Account Login: Do not log in to highly sensitive government or personal email accounts. Always use your phone's mobile data or personal hotspot for such activities.

4. Keep the phone's 'Auto-Connect' feature turned off
Automatic Connection: With auto-connect enabled, your phone may connect to any nearby open or fake network without your permission.
Precaution: Go to your phone's network settings and always keep the 'Auto-Join' or 'Auto-Connect' option turned off.

5. Disconnect and 'Forget' the Wi-Fi After Use

If you are compelled to use public Wi-Fi for urgent work, turn off your Wi-Fi immediately after finishing the task. Go to your phone's list of saved networks and select the 'Forget network' option for that Wi-Fi connection so that your phone does not automatically connect to it again in the future.
