Until now, the fear was that all this information was being shared with the company; however, WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that claims to eliminate this concern.

On Wednesday (May 13), Meta launched the Incognito Chat feature on both WhatsApp and the Meta AI app. With this feature, anything you discuss with Meta AI will be invisible to both Meta and anyone else. As soon as the chat ends, everything vanishes.

How Does This Feature Work?

This feature is built upon WhatsApp's Private Processing technology. When you initiate an Incognito Chat, your conversation is processed within a secure environment—one that even Meta itself cannot view. The session terminates, and messages are automatically deleted the moment you close the app or lock your phone. Nothing is saved.

Why Was This Feature Created?

Will Cathcart, the Head of WhatsApp, states that people have begun asking AI significant and deeply personal questions about their lives. It is not always necessary—or desirable—for the underlying details behind these questions to reach the companies providing the AI ​​services. This feature was developed with precisely that sentiment in mind.

It Will Operate in This Format Only

For the time being, Incognito Chat will function exclusively via text. You will not be able to share photos or documents within this mode. It also incorporates safety filters designed to decline responses to inappropriate or dangerous queries. Meta has further clarified that while the company may utilize standard Meta AI conversations to refine its models, Incognito Chat is distinct; it will not be used for training purposes.

Meta Is Also Preparing to Launch This Feature

Meta is also planning to introduce a "Side Chat" feature in the coming months. With this, you will be able to discreetly seek assistance from Meta AI in the middle of any ongoing WhatsApp conversation without the other participants even realizing it. This feature is currently rolling out gradually and will become available to all users on both WhatsApp and the Meta AI app in the coming months.
