Are your children secretly whiling away time on YouTube Shorts? Here is how to set limits and regain control..
How to Turn Off YouTube Shorts: Almost everyone has YouTube installed on their phones. Consequently, instead of watching long-form videos on the platform, people are now increasingly engrossed in watching YouTube Shorts. It is not just adults; even young children often grab their parents' phones to watch Shorts.
If you—or your children—have developed a habit of watching Shorts, this issue can be resolved using a clever trick. After all, it is easy to lose track of time and spend hours watching Shorts without even realizing it. To help you reclaim this time, we are going to explore a specific setting.
You Can Set the Shorts Viewing Limit to Zero: As soon as you open YouTube, Shorts appear alongside other videos. Once you tap on a Short, the next 5 to 10 minutes seem to vanish in an instant. The YouTube app does feature a "Show fewer Shorts" button, but this option remains effective for only 30 days.
As a result, Shorts tend to keep reappearing in your feed repeatedly. Last October, the company introduced a time-limit option, which allowed users to set a minimum duration of 15 minutes.
Now, the company has updated this setting to include an option that allows users to set the time limit to zero. This means that once the time limit is set to zero, Shorts will no longer play.
How to Set the Time Limit to Zero?: Open the YouTube app and tap on your profile icon. Next, tap on the gear icon to access the Time Management Dashboard. Here, under the "Daily limit" section, you will find a toggle for the "Shorts feed limit." Tap on this toggle to reveal the time-limit options, and then select "0 minutes."
After doing this, completely close the app and then reopen it. Currently, this feature is available exclusively on the YouTube mobile app. It has not yet been rolled out to the desktop or TV versions of the app, nor has the company announced any plans regarding its future availability on those platforms. Control Rests with Parents: With the help of this feature, parents can set the time limit for Shorts on their children's teen accounts to zero. This setting cannot be altered on teen accounts managed through Google Family Link or the YouTube Family Center.
