Mobile phones have become an essential part of our lives today, and a SIM card is necessary to connect the phone to a network. Many people use the same SIM card for years. This raises the question: do SIM cards have an expiry date? Today, we will tell you when you should replace your old SIM card.

For your information, SIM cards do not usually have a fixed expiry date printed on them like food products do. A SIM card's lifespan is not determined solely by how many years have passed since its purchase. It can continue to be used as long as it functions correctly and your mobile number remains active on the operator's network.

However, if a SIM card is not used for a long period or if there is no required activity on the number, the operator may suspend services in accordance with their rules. Therefore, SIM card expiry and mobile number deactivation should not be considered the same thing. If your SIM is several years old but you face no issues with calling, SMS, or internet usage, there is no need to replace it simply because of its age; an old SIM can function normally under standard conditions. That said, advancements in technology have brought changes to SIM capabilities and network technologies.

For instance, very old SIM cards may have limited support for new network features or advanced services—especially if the SIM was purchased years ago, before significant changes in mobile network technology occurred.

It is worth noting that you do not necessarily need a new SIM card for every 4G or 5G phone; in many cases, your existing SIM can work on the new network. However, if your SIM is very old and fails to function properly with your operator's new network services, you can opt for a SIM replacement. You can verify SIM compatibility and the need for a replacement at your operator's store or through an authorized channel.

A SIM replacement might be necessary if the network frequently drops, the SIM suddenly stops working, or the phone repeatedly displays errors like "No SIM" or "SIM Not Detected." Additionally, replacement becomes essential if the SIM card is physically damaged, its contact points are worn out, or issues persist even when the SIM is inserted into another phone. Sometimes, the problem lies not with the SIM itself but with the phone's SIM slot, network coverage, or the operator's service; therefore, it is advisable to test the SIM in another phone before opting for a replacement.

If you are getting a SIM replacement for the same mobile number, your number generally remains unchanged. The operator can deactivate the old SIM and issue a new one linked to the same number. However, it may take some time for certain services to reactivate after the SIM is replaced. For numbers linked to banking, UPI, or other services, you should ensure that the new SIM has been properly activated.

It is important to note that SIM replacement should always be done through your mobile operator's official store. You should never share OTPs, PINs, or sensitive information with unknown individuals. If your SIM is lost or stolen, the first step is to have the operator block the old SIM; a new SIM with the same number can then be issued.
