Arattai: Arattai is creating a stir, but to compete with WhatsApp, these features will have to be added..

The indigenous messaging app Arattai was launched in 2021, but recently, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan urged the adoption of indigenous digital platforms, which led to a sudden surge in popularity. The app's traffic increased 100-fold in just a few days. India's track record for homegrown digital products has been mixed, raising questions about whether Arattai can truly compete with WhatsApp.
Arattai Features: These Features Need to Be Added
Investors say that Arattai's survival depends on its development beyond chat. Adding services like payments (UPI) and commerce (ONDC) to the app would likely increase its appeal. Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnav and Dharmendra Pradhan's association with the app, which was linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's campaign to promote the use of indigenous products, boosted its popularity. However, some analysts say this surge may be temporary, as many users may return to WhatsApp.
Arattai, a messaging app developed by Chennai-based Zoho Corporation, means "chat." Siddharth Pai, founding partner of early-stage venture capital firm 3one4 Capital, says that domestic software products don't gain popularity because people are more attracted to foreign consumer technology. He added that maintaining a strong network is more important for Arattai than convenience. The number of people signing up for the app and the number of active users on the platform are two key factors that determine the popularity of any messaging app.
Anand Lunia, founding partner of India Quotient, said that widespread adoption is essential for any messaging app. He added that until then, Arattai can focus on building tools, and if its base is strong, it will grow 10, 20, or even 100 times and achieve widespread adoption.
