Apps: WhatsApp has turned the tables! It's soon rolling out this special feature to millions of users..
Indian instant messaging app Arattai, which quickly gained popularity as an alternative to WhatsApp last month, is now losing its popularity. Arattai recently dropped from the Google Play Store's top-100 trending apps list. However, WhatsApp is set to realize the interoperability vision of its founder, Sridhar Vembu, before Arattai. This feature could completely transform the chatting experience for every WhatsApp user.
What is the Interoperability feature?
Interoperability refers to the ability to connect or communicate between different platforms. Just as UPI allows you to send money from one app to another, this feature is now also coming to instant messaging apps. This means that in the future, you will be able to send messages directly from WhatsApp to Telegram or Signal without changing apps.
Testing phase begins in WhatsApp.
According to tech reports, WhatsApp has begun testing this feature. A report by WABetaInfo claims that select beta users have already started receiving this new feature. This means that it may now be gradually rolled out to all users.
Interestingly, Arattai co-founder Sridhar Vembu recently shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account that his team is discussing interoperability with iSPIRT's Sharad Sharma. He believes this feature will break the monopoly among messaging apps and provide users with more options.
EU Pressure on Meta
According to reports, Meta is implementing this feature due to the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA). This Act requires large tech companies to make their platforms available for open communication to prevent the dominance of any single app. To this end, Meta is testing interoperability with WhatsApp.
Arattai is also developing new features.
Zoho Group's Arattai is also continuously upgrading its platform. The company recently implemented end-to-end encryption for one-on-one chats. However, group chats still lack this feature, which will be introduced later. For now, end-to-end encryption is optional on Arattai. WhatsApp's new cross-platform chatting feature will only be available to European users. Information on when it will be available in other countries is not yet available.
