In today's times, the PAN card (Permanent Account Number) has become an essential document—not just for filing taxes, but also for opening bank accounts, making investments, and carrying out any major financial transaction. If you do not have a PAN card, or if there is an error in the name, date of birth, or address on your existing card, you no longer need to make rounds to agents.

The Income Tax Department has made the process of obtaining and correcting a PAN card completely online and extremely simple.

How to apply for a new card?
1. First, visit the official website of NSDL or UTIITSL.
2. Click on the 'Apply Online' tab and select the 'New PAN - Indian Citizen (Form 49A)' option.
3. Enter your basic details (name, address, date of birth, email ID, and mobile number). A token number will be generated thereafter.
4. Select the 'Submit digitally through e-KYC & e-Sign' option. For this, you must have an Aadhaar card linked to your mobile number. This eliminates the need to send any physical documents.
5. Pay the online fee of approximately ₹100.
6. Once the process is complete, you will receive an acknowledgement number, which you can use to track the status of your PAN card.

How to correct errors in a PAN card?
If any information on your PAN card is incorrect, the procedure to rectify it is quite similar:

1. Visit the same NSDL or UTIITSL website.
2. This time, select the 'Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data' option under the application type.
3. Enter your existing PAN number.
4. Enter the correct details for the information requiring correction (such as name, date of birth, or father's name) and tick the corresponding box you wish to update.
5. Upload documents that verify the new and correct information (such as your Class 10 mark sheet or Aadhaar card).
6. Pay the fee and submit the form. Once the online application is completed, your e-PAN is sent to your registered email within a few days. Meanwhile, the physical PAN card will be delivered to your address via Speed Post within 15 to 20 days.
