Apple has announced a major change to the App Store. The company has confirmed that more ads will be displayed in App Store search results. According to an update on the Apple Ads website, this change will be implemented starting in 2026. Currently, only one ad appears at the top of any App Store search results, but in the future, ad placements will also be added towards the bottom of the search results. This move is seen as a way for Apple to further expand its advertising business.

According to the company (via 9to5Mac), most users find and download apps on the App Store through search. Apple says that approximately 65 percent of app downloads occur directly after a search. Therefore, under Apple Ads, extra ad spots are being added to search queries to provide more opportunities for developers and advertisers. No separate campaign or settings changes will be required for these new ad placements.

Apple has clarified that advertisers will not be able to choose or bid on a specific position. Where an ad appears will depend entirely on the auction system, which includes factors such as the bid amount and its ranking. This means that in the same campaign, an ad might sometimes appear at the top and sometimes at the bottom of the search results. However, the ad format will remain the same for every position.

There are no changes to the billing model. Apple Ads will continue to charge on a cost-per-tap or cost-per-install basis. When the new ad units are rolled out in 2026, existing search ad campaigns will automatically become eligible for these new slots.

Apple claims that more than 800 million users visit the App Store every week, and more than 85 percent of them download at least one app during their visit. According to the company, ads appearing at the top of search results have a conversion rate of approximately 60 percent. The new ad placements will be supported on iOS and iPadOS 26.2 or later versions.
