Following a recent spyware threat alert, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has sent a notice to Apple. This action was taken after CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team) advised users across the country to update their devices immediately and seek technical assistance if needed.

According to media reports, the ministry has sought a response from Apple because the company had once again issued a warning about the 'Mercenary' spyware threat. Meanwhile, CERT-In has stated that users who received this alert can contact them for a free check of their Apple devices.

CERT-In said, "Users who have received this notification and wish to have their Apple devices checked or require technical assistance can contact us at this email address."

What is a spyware alert?
Apple and Google send alerts to users who may be targeted by spyware developed by a government or state-sponsored group. Cybersecurity experts believe that such attacks are increasing and pose a significant threat to digital security. According to Meghna Bal, Director of the Esya Centre, the growing use of commercial spyware is having a serious impact on cybersecurity in India and globally. She added that such threats are likely to increase in the future, and therefore, governments and the industry need to take strong collaborative measures.
