**What is the APAAR ID?**
The APAAR ID is part of the Ministry of Education's 'One Nation, One Student ID' scheme. Under this scheme, every student in the country is to be assigned a unique 12-digit digital identity. This ID will securely store all academic data, including school records, marksheets, certificates, and other relevant documents. In essence, students will be able to retrieve their documents in the future with just a single click using their APAAR ID.

The Supreme Court recently delivered a significant verdict regarding the APAAR ID. While hearing a petition, the Court ruled that the creation of an APAAR ID must be voluntary rather than mandatory. This decision follows a ruling by the Odisha High Court that had already made the APAAR ID voluntary; the Supreme Court upheld this stance, thereby making the process voluntary for students nationwide. Additionally, the Court directed an examination of data security concerns associated with the APAAR ID system. It further mandated that the consent form used during the creation of the APAAR ID must include a clear option to opt out or decline.
