Google has recently launched a new feature for Android users that aims to bring a sharing experience similar to the iPhone's AirDrop to Android phones. The company has introduced the "Tap to Share" feature, which allows users to share photos, contacts, location links, and other files by simply bringing two supported Android phones close together.
Currently, this feature is being rolled out to select Pixel and Samsung devices. According to Google, it will be extended to more Android smartphones in the future.

Which phones will get Tap to Share?

Tap to Share is currently being rolled out for the Pixel 6 and subsequent Pixel models. The phone must be running Android 17 for this feature to work. Additionally, Samsung's new Galaxy Z Fold 8 devices also support this feature.

The feature operates via a "share card," which appears when sharing photos, contacts, and other content. However, Tap to Share does not currently work with apps used within a Pixel's work profile.

How does Tap to Share work?
Using this feature is quite simple. Both Android phones must be unlocked and placed very close to each other.
As soon as an NFC connection is established between the phones, the sharing option will appear. A visual cue will also appear on the device screen, indicating that Tap to Share has been activated.

Users can then share items such as photos, contacts, location links, or media files with the other phone. To end the sharing session, simply move the phones away from each other; this breaks the NFC connection and stops the sharing process.

How to turn off the feature
Google has enabled Tap to Share by default. However, users who do not wish to use this feature can turn it off.

Currently, Google has limited 'Tap to Share' to select devices, but the company plans to roll it out to a wider range of Android smartphones. According to Google, this feature could become available for other Android devices by the end of this year.
This means that sharing content between phones will become even easier for Android users in the near future. In particular, the need to repeatedly access the sharing menu to send items like photos or contacts will be reduced.
