AI to Detect Skin Cancer Risk Years in Advance: How Will This Technology Benefit Medical Science?
AI Can Detect Skin Cancer: Researchers in Sweden have utilized historical data to identify the risk of developing melanoma—the most dangerous form of skin cancer—years before it manifests. This breakthrough is expected to help save lives.
AI Can Detect Skin Cancer: AI is poised to revolutionize the healthcare sector. This technology has the potential to detect various diseases early on, ensuring that patients receive timely treatment. In a recent instance of this capability, Swedish researchers have employed AI to identify individuals at risk of developing melanoma—the most dangerous type of skin cancer—within the next five years. Leveraging AI, they analyzed existing medical records to identify individuals who face a heightened risk of developing skin cancer in the coming years.
AI Can Identify Risk Factors
Researchers at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden achieved this milestone. The research team analyzed clinical data from approximately 6 million people across Sweden. They fed the individuals' medical histories and treatment records into their AI model. In approximately 73 percent of cases, the AI successfully identified those at a higher risk of developing melanoma. By utilizing data on diagnoses, medications, and sociodemographics, the researchers were able to identify individuals who faced a 33 percent risk of developing melanoma within the subsequent five years.
Melanoma Caused by UV Light
The primary cause of melanoma is ultraviolet (UV) light, which originates directly from the sun. This cancer can also metastasize, or spread, to other parts of the body. Once it has spread throughout the body, the chances of patient survival become significantly lower. Therefore, early detection of this disease is crucial. It is the sixth most rapidly increasing form of cancer, and it claims the lives of a large number of people annually. In this context, utilizing AI to identify this disease early offers a promising avenue for saving lives. Once individuals facing a higher risk have been identified, it becomes easier to provide them with follow-up care and treatment.
AI Can Also Detect Heart Diseases Early
Much like skin cancer, AI can detect heart diseases years in advance. In a study conducted at the Mayo Clinic, researchers have devised a method to detect heart diseases using AI. By analyzing patients' routine scans in a novel way with the aid of AI, the researchers were able to determine the amount of fat accumulated around the heart. This fat can subsequently lead to inflammation and other medical conditions. Detecting this would be impossible without the use of AI.
