In the age of AI, cyber fraud has taken on a new form. Fraudsters are no longer limited to fake emails or calls; they have become even more adept at defrauding people using artificial intelligence (AI). According to Google's latest report, the 2025 Global Anti-Scam Alliance "State of Scams" survey revealed that 57% of people have fallen victim to some form of online fraud in the past year. Google warns that fraudsters are now misusing AI tools, and it's crucial to be vigilant to protect yourself from them.

How Fraudsters Are Using AI and How to Stay Safe
Online Job Scams - Many frauds today begin with fake job advertisements. Fraudsters create fake career websites and social media job posts in the name of real companies. They then demand money in the name of "registration" or "interview processing" fees and obtain personal information such as Aadhaar, PAN, or bank details.

Google's advice:
The Scam Detection feature in Gmail and Google Messages automatically identifies such emails and messages. Additionally, be sure to turn on Two-Step Verification for your own safety.

Fake Reviews and Extortion Scams - Scammers often deliberately lower a business's Google profile rating by posting one-star reviews, then demand money from the owner, promising to remove the review if they pay.

Google Maps now offers a direct option to report such extortion. Google advises against contacting scammers or making any payments, but instead taking screenshots and reporting them.

Fake AI Apps -
Scammers are taking advantage of the growing popularity of AI. They create fake apps masquerading as tools like ChatGPT or Gemini, which in turn steal data from your phone or install malware.

Google's advice:
Download apps only from official app stores and pay attention to the URL. The Enhanced Safe Browsing feature in Chrome warns you of dangerous links in real-time.

Scams from Free VPN Apps
Many people fall prey to scammers lured by the promise of a free VPN. These fake VPN apps can steal your browsing details and bank information.

Google's advice:
Keep Play Protect on your phone, which automatically scans apps. Also, only download VPN apps from verified sources or apps with a VPN badge.
With the increasing use of AI, cybercriminals have become smarter. But with Google's tools and a little vigilance, you can keep your data and money safe.
