The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly increasing in offices today. Companies are emphasizing that their employees should utilize AI in some form during their daily tasks. The prevailing belief is that AI saves time, thereby boosting company profits. However, the ground reality tells a different story. A new report indicates that the use of AI is proving to be a heavy financial burden on companies. The situation is such that the top one percent of companies globally are spending approximately ₹7 lakh per employee on AI tools.

**Spending ₹7 Lakh Per Employee**
According to a recent report by Ramp's AI Index, the AI budgets of the top one percent of US companies are skyrocketing. As of last month, these companies were spending an average of $7,400—or roughly ₹7 lakh—per employee. What is most surprising is how quickly this surge in spending has occurred. In January of this year, the expenditure stood at $2,590 (approximately ₹2,47,500) per employee; within just a few months, the figure has nearly tripled. However, this spending is not uniform across the board. While the top 1 percent of companies are paying massive amounts, the top 10 percent of companies spend around $650 (₹62,000) per employee. When averaged across the board, the figure drops to just $11.95 (approximately ₹1,140).

**Token-Based Systems Increase the Burden on Companies**
The primary reason for this massive spike in AI tool costs is a new billing method. Major AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic have adopted a "per-token" model. Simply put, AI labs now charge companies based on the number of tokens consumed. The more work an employee assigns to an AI tool, the more tokens are consumed, resulting in a heftier bill. This rising cost has caught the attention of tech industry giants. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman notes that it has become something of a meme for companies to complain about exhausting their entire annual budget within the first quarter alone. Meanwhile, Nvidia executive Bryan Catanzaro acknowledged in April that computing costs for his team had surpassed their salary expenses.

**Major Companies Crack Down as Budgets Spiral**
As costs began to spiral out of control, several major companies initiated strict measures. Industry giants like Uber, Amazon, and Walmart have started curbing excessive AI usage. These companies have set limits on token consumption for employees to prevent unnecessary expenditure. This sends a clear message to the workforce: while AI usage in the office remains essential, it is now subject to defined limits.

**Anthropic Maintains Its Market Momentum**
When looking at which AI providers companies trust the most, Anthropic leads the pack in the US, with approximately 43.5% of businesses utilizing its services. OpenAI follows closely with a 39.7% market share, while Elon Musk’s xAI holds 4%. Additionally, a new trend is emerging: heavy users are increasingly turning to cheaper open-source models, a segment that saw its market share rise to 6.1% in July. While this has not yet significantly impacted the revenues of OpenAI or Anthropic, it signals that companies are exploring affordable alternatives alongside premium tools.
