Draft Rules on Deepfakes Released
The government has also released draft rules for identifying and responding to AI-generated deepfakes. The rules are currently being sought from experts and the public. The draft amendments include several new regulations, including mandatory labeling of content, user declaration, and platform and content verification, along with other provisions related to identifying and preventing misinformation and ensuring the protection of both freedom of expression and democracy.
Ashwini Vaishnav stated that it is crucial to maintain a balance between freedom of expression and the protection of democracy when addressing issues related to fake news and social media. The government is working towards this with utmost sensitivity. He also noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, Digital India has brought technology to the common man in the country, and social media has given every citizen a platform to express their views.
