AI controversy: India's strict stance on Musk's Grok AI has an impact; no more obscene deepfakes will be created on X..

Social media

The Elon Musk-owned social media platform X has taken strict measures regarding its AI chatbot Grok. It is adopting a zero-tolerance policy to prevent the misuse of Grok AI. Specifically, to protect women and prevent non-consensual nudity, the platform has imposed strict restrictions on image generation and editing. This move comes after increasing scrutiny and regulatory pressure from governments in several countries, including India. Creating images of real people in revealing clothing, such as bikinis or underwear, is now completely prohibited.

X stated on its official safety handle that the ability to create or edit sexually explicit content through Grok AI has been restricted. These restrictions will apply to both free and paid users. However, the image generation and editing feature through Grok will now only be available to subscribers. X clarified that, where it is illegal, the ability to generate images of real people in bikinis, underwear, or similar clothing on Grok accounts and the X platform has been geoblocked. Technical measures have also been implemented to prevent the editing of such images.

Claim of an additional layer of security
According to the company, this step adds an extra layer of security. This will allow for holding users accountable who violate the platform's rules or the law. X said that its safety team continuously monitors the platform 24/7 and, upon finding violations, removes content, suspends accounts, and cooperates with law enforcement agencies when necessary.

Impact of the Indian government's strictness
On January 2nd, the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued an ultimatum to X, directing it to immediately remove obscene, objectionable, and illegal content from Grok. It also demanded an Action Taken Report (ATR) detailing the technical measures and compliance mechanisms. Following this, X acknowledged its mistake and removed approximately 3500 pieces of objectionable content. It also deleted more than 600 accounts. The company also assured the government that it would fully comply with Indian laws and IT rules.

 Growing Global Pressure
Besides India, the UK and the European Union (EU) have also expressed concerns about deepfakes and non-consensual sexually explicit images associated with Grok AI. Regulatory bodies are now taking a stricter stance on content moderation, data security, and user safety regarding generative AI tools.

What does X say?
X says these steps are consistent with its existing safety protocols. All AI-generated content created or posted on the platform will now be subject to its rules and local laws. The company reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards child sexual abuse material and non-consensual nudity.
