Afraid to talk to ChatGPT? Signal has launched its own secure AI, and the company itself won't be able to read your secret chats..

When interacting with AI chatbots, you might also worry about your conversations being leaked. This fear has been addressed by Moxie Marlinspike, the engineer behind the Signal messenger. He claims to have launched the first AI personal chatbot, Confer, where conversations will be completely secure. Even the company's servers will not have access to the conversation data.

According to Moxie, Confer is an open-source AI assistant, meaning its entire code is publicly available, and anyone can see how it works. Its biggest feature is that user conversations are protected with end-to-end encryption. Confer uses a PassKey for login instead of a password. The server does not have a copy of this PassKey. This means that the company itself cannot read your chats. Hackers, the police, or any government agency cannot access this data either.

Data is secure even on the server.
Typically, server administrators can see everything, but this is not the case with Confer. It is claimed that a special technology called Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) is used. To understand this simply, it's like a room where no one can peek inside.

Signal-like experience, chats remain safe.
Like Signal, Confer does not link your digital identity, such as your email or IP address, to your account. Chats can be synced across multiple devices without compromising privacy. Moxie claims that many people have openly shared things on Confer that they would never share on platforms like ChatGPT, because they fear data leaks there.

A challenge for large AI platforms
Currently, large AI platforms like Google, OpenAI, or Microsoft do not offer end-to-end encryption, and there are no indications of such an update in the future. These companies have several legal and business reasons why user data cannot remain completely private. Experts believe that the entry of models like Confer into the market could put pressure on these companies as well.
