As summer arrives, the air conditioner (AC) becomes a major necessity. People run their ACs day and night to escape the scorching sun and humidity, but the resulting electricity bill at the end of the month can be daunting. If you want to save on your electricity bill, however, you don't need to stop using your AC.

In reality, most people do not know how to use the AC remote correctly. By adjusting a few specific settings on the remote, you can significantly reduce your electricity bill. Let’s look at five smart settings that will help you save money:

1. 24 Degrees is the Smartest Setting

Most people have a habit of setting their AC to 18 or 20 degrees to cool the room quickly. While this might cool the room a few minutes faster, it causes the electricity bill to skyrocket. According to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius is the most optimal and comfortable for the human body. Research indicates that you can save approximately 6% on electricity for every degree you raise the AC temperature. Therefore, always keep your AC set to 24 degrees.

2. Use Eco or Energy Saver Mode

Nowadays, almost all modern AC remotes feature an 'Eco' or 'Energy Saver' mode button. Once the room is sufficiently cool, this mode automatically switches off the compressor while keeping the fan running. As the room temperature rises, the compressor kicks back in. This mode is one of the most effective ways to save electricity.

3. Sleep Mode Ensures Peaceful Sleep and Lower Bills

When sleeping at night, the body's temperature drops slightly, and the outside air also cools down. This is where 'Sleep Mode' comes in handy. When this mode is activated, the AC gradually increases the temperature by 0.5 to 1 degree every hour. This prevents your sleep from being interrupted by the cold at night and stops the AC compressor from running continuously at full capacity, resulting in significant electricity savings.

4. 'Dry Mode' is effective during humid heat

During the rainy season or when humidity levels are high, use 'Dry Mode' (indicated by a water drop icon) instead of 'Cool Mode'. This mode absorbs moisture from the room, keeping it cool and comfortable while consuming less electricity. With reduced humidity, you will feel pleasantly cool even at a setting of 24 degrees.

5. Proper use of the timer
We often leave the AC running all night and switch it off in the morning only when we feel cold. To save electricity, use the timer feature on the remote. If you wake up at 7 AM, set the timer to turn the AC off at 5 AM. The room remains cool enough for you to sleep comfortably without the AC for the remaining two hours. This saves two hours of electricity daily, making a significant difference over the course of a month.
