Amidst this severe heat and ongoing heatwave, the Delhi Traffic Police is providing its personnel with AC helmets (Air-Conditioned Helmets). These specialized helmets will keep the heads of officers performing outdoor duties cool under the scorching sun, thereby offering relief from dehydration and headaches. Operating on thermoelectric cooling technology, these helmets utilize an internal battery to generate a flow of cool air, shielding police personnel from heatstroke and dehydration.

Police officers who are required to stand for extended periods under the intense sun are finding significant relief through the use of these helmets. **Key Features of the AC Helmet**

**Cooling Sensation:** A fan and cooling unit installed within the helmet's interior direct a stream of air toward the head that is approximately 10–15 degrees cooler than the ambient external temperature.

**Mechanism of Action:** These helmets utilize thermoelectric technology—specifically, a small AC fan—powered by a battery pack.

**Battery Backup:** Typically, the unit is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery worn at the waist, which is capable of providing continuous cooling for approximately 8 hours.

**Lightweight and Safe:** These helmets are lightweight in design and are manufactured in strict adherence to established safety standards.

**Significant Relief from Heat Provided by AC Helmets and Portable Fans**

Officers deployed on the streets report that these measures are proving to be immensely helpful in coping with the current scorching conditions. Speaking to NDTV, Delhi Traffic Police Head Constable Jitendra stated that the AC helmets offer substantial relief. He explained that the system directs a flow of air onto the forehead, keeping the head relatively cool—a welcome respite from the intense external heat—and preventing the adverse effects of direct sun exposure. Additionally, the provision of ORS solutions and bottled water via mobile food vans is also providing much-needed comfort to the personnel. Meanwhile, Delhi Traffic Police Head Constable Amarchand, who is on duty on the road, states that thanks to portable fans and AC helmets, direct sunlight does not beat down on his head, allowing him to perform his duties comfortably even in this weather.

The personnel explained that while their standard duty shift is fixed at eight hours, they are required to spend four of those hours out in the sun amidst this scorching and intense heat, as VIP and VVIP movements occur frequently. These AC helmets take between two and two-and-a-half hours to fully charge, and the personnel received them just 15 to 20 days ago.

**Porta Cabins Ready, But Power Connection Still 'Under Process'**

To provide respite from the heat and allow for some rest, approximately 3–4 porta-cabins have been set up across the New Delhi district. While these cabins are equipped with chairs and fans, two of them currently lack a power connection. When an NDTV team visited the porta-cabin located at Kartavya Path, they found that there was no electricity connection whatsoever, despite fans being placed inside. Upon speaking with the traffic personnel present at the site, they were informed that the work regarding the power supply is still "in process." They added that only the Traffic Inspector (TI) could provide information regarding when the installation would be fully completed.

Heatwave conditions are expected to persist in Delhi until May 29. Under these circumstances, the absence of a power connection renders the construction of these portable cabins entirely futile. It now remains to be seen how soon the power supply will be restored to these cabins, enabling the personnel to utilize them effectively during this severe heat.
