A Blow to Privacy on Instagram: This Security Feature Will Be Removed from DMs Starting May 8th
A major change is coming to Instagram. Meta has announced the removal of the End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) feature from the platform’s Direct Messages (DMs). This move will completely compromise the privacy of personal chats.
This is significant news for Instagram users. Meta is set to remove the End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) feature from the DM section of this social media platform. Consequently, message privacy will be entirely eliminated, and not all chats will remain private. For your information, the company had originally released this feature in 2023 specifically to help maintain privacy within Instagram. Prior to this, this security layer had already been added to WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
Feature to be Removed in May
According to an official blog post by Meta, End-to-End Encryption will be removed from the DM section of Instagram after May 8, 2026. This will strip personal chats of an additional layer of security, thereby eliminating privacy and making it possible for chats to be accessed.
Why Was This Step Taken?
Meta has not yet explicitly clarified why End-to-End Encryption is being removed from Instagram DMs; however, reports suggest that this step has been taken in the interest of child safety and in response to government directives.
Curbing Crime
Reports claim that the removal of encryption will effectively make calls and chats accessible. This will enable the company to access the content of chats exchanged between users. It is believed that this measure will help prevent crimes such as Child Sexual Abuse and online fraud. It is worth noting that security agencies in the US and the UK recently raised concerns regarding End-to-End Encryption—arguing that it hinders the monitoring of content related to child sexual abuse—and had called for its discontinuation.
Will This Feature Also Be Removed from Facebook Messenger? The company has not yet provided any official information regarding the removal of end-to-end encryption from Facebook Messenger. Consequently, it is difficult to say anything definitive on the matter at this time. For now, the removal of this feature has been announced only for Instagram.
