5G Internet: Installing this device will turn 5G internet into a rocket, IIIT-Bangalore did wonders..

IIIT Bangalore develops smart RIS panels to boost 5G coverage: Coverage gaps and signal drops are a major problem for mobile networks. The International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIIT-B) has developed Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), or smart panels. These panels can be installed on walls or poles to redirect or focus network signals, increasing internet speeds and reducing call drops. Importantly, they can be easily integrated into existing 5G networks without major modifications.
Plug-and-Play Solution
The biggest advantage of RIS is that they can be easily integrated into existing 5G-Advanced networks in a plug-and-play manner. This means coverage can be improved without the need for new towers. In 6G networks, they can be integrated directly into the design, improving beam management and performance. This will require companies to install fewer towers, saving both cost and energy.
Research and Technology Design
The panel developed by the IIIT-B team operates at 3.5 GHz, a critical band for 5G. It consists of 256 units arranged in a 16x16 grid, controlled by 1-bit PIN diodes. These tiny switches direct the signal, strengthening network coverage. Furthermore, this technology reduces interference by blocking unwanted signals.
RIS technology currently faces challenges. For example, it can make it difficult to quickly adjust signals for fast-moving users (cars, trains, drones). To address this, AI-based predictive beamforming and real-time signal adjustment are being worked on. The IIIT-B team is further researching software-defined RIS and multi-panel testing, which could further improve both 5G and 6G in the future.
